A Sweet History Talk & Tasting with Hannah Spiegelman

Sept. 24th @ 6-8PM

Calling all epicureans and history buffs! Please join us for a talk and tasting as we host ice cream historian and maker Hannah Spiegelman, creator of A Sweet History (opens in new tab).  Taste your way through with three Franklin Fountain creations to accompany Hannah’s research through ice cream culture. Estimated event duration: ~2 hrs.

Hannah Spiegelman of A Sweet History will discuss her research on three historic landscapes of ice cream consumption in 19th century America: the pleasure garden, the ice cream parlor, and the soda fountain. These exclusive spaces conveyed ideals formed in European spa culture such as pastoralism, escapism, health, and leisure. By looking at newspaper clippings, trade cards, and caricatures, a picture emerges of the ice cream institutions that enforced gender, class, and race norms in growing metropolises, and how American ice cream culture was born.

Lecture & tasting exploring 19th century ice cream consumption patterns in America. Program hosted at The Cacao Pod at 104 Market St. Phila. PA 19106 on Thus. Sept. 24th 6pm-8pm.
